Keratin treatment and hair botox are routinely assumed to be the same thing. They are not: one smooths and makes hair manageable, the other rebuilds structure. Here is how they differ, how long each lasts and what the aftercare demands. BOSCO's current prices are on the hair services page.
What keratin treatment is
Keratin is the protein hair is largely made of. During the treatment a formula is worked through the lengths and then sealed in with a flat iron at high heat — that is the step where the hair is straightened and the surface goes smooth.
The point of it is straightening and manageability. Afterwards the lengths frizz far less in humidity, comb easily, and styling time drops noticeably. This is exactly why it is in demand through a Tashkent summer: in dry heat, hair frizzes fast and holds a style badly.
The effect typically lasts three to five months, depending on the condition your hair started in and what you do afterwards.
What hair botox is
Despite the name, this has nothing to do with injections and involves no needles at all. Hair botox is a restorative treatment: a dense formula is applied to the lengths, held under heat, then rinsed out.
The job is different — filling the hair from within rather than flattening it. Afterwards the lengths look denser and glossier and the ends break less. There is some smoothing effect, but far weaker than with keratin.
It generally holds for two to three months — less than keratin, because it is primarily care rather than straightening.
Nanoplasty, briefly
Nanoplasty sits close to keratin: it also smooths and is also sealed with heat. The difference is in the formula, which is usually presented as gentler. In practice both the result and the duration land near keratin's, so it is worth settling the choice in the chair — much depends on the specific product line the salon works with.
Compared: effect, duration, aftercare
| Keratin treatment | Hair botox | |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Straightening, manageability | Repair, density and shine |
| Straightening strength | Strong | Weak |
| How long it lasts | 3–5 months | 2–3 months |
| How it is done | Sealed with a flat iron at high heat | Held under gentle heat |
| Aftercare | Requires sulphate-free shampoo | Ordinary gentle care |
Which one suits you
Keratin treatment if the main complaint is frizz and the time styling takes. On thick, coarse or naturally curly hair the difference is most obvious.
Hair botox if hair is dry and weak, ends are breaking and the lengths look sparse. On coloured and lightened hair this is more often the right call.
A specific case worth naming: hair that has been coloured or lightened several times in quick succession. Those lengths lose moisture faster, so a restorative treatment first makes more sense — straightening can follow later, and doing both back to back on fragile hair is not advisable.
Length matters too. On short hair the smoothing effect reads less: there is not enough weight, and short hair sits well anyway. Restorative work usually delivers more there. On long, thick hair the opposite is true — the difference shows from day one.
Tashkent's hard water interferes in either case: calcium and magnesium salts build a film on the surface, which is why a technician will often suggest a clarifying step first. That is not an upsell — without it the formula does not lie evenly.
You do not have to decide alone. At BOSCO the technician looks at the state of your hair first and proposes a treatment after that — see the hair services page.
Aftercare
After a keratin treatment you need a sulphate-free shampoo: an ordinary clarifying formula strips the treatment faster and shortens the result. After hair botox there is no such strict requirement; gentle care is enough.
In both cases, for the first few days, avoid tight elastics and anything that leaves a crease. A Tashkent summer adds one more rule: always wash after the pool, because chlorine combined with sun is particularly aggressive.
How you comb matters as well. Work through wet hair with a wide-tooth comb, from the ends upward. After treatment the lengths are smoother and the comb passes easily, so there is no need to force it.
Dryers and hot tools are not off limits, but turn the temperature down. A medium setting finished with a cool shot extends the result noticeably, and heat protection stays mandatory — that rule does not change after a treatment.
Winter brings the heating season and very dry air. A humidifier at home and a leave-in on the lengths do more for longevity than any additional salon step.
What not to expect
Neither treatment "heals" hair. They work on the surface and the structure, not the root, so they do nothing for shedding or scalp problems — that is a question for a doctor.
Nor do they replace a haircut. Split ends cannot be physically repaired: a treatment hides them for a while but does not do what scissors do.
There is also no point repeating them endlessly. Treatments are normally redone once the effect has run out — keratin roughly two or three times a year, hair botox somewhat more often. Going again early does not improve the result; the formula simply accumulates and weighs the hair down.
And the outcome depends on where your hair starts. On lengths that have been coloured many times the effect will be shorter — that is a property of the material, not a failing of the technician.
Frequently asked questions
Which is better, keratin or hair botox?
They do different jobs, so there is no single better option. If hair frizzes and styling takes too long, keratin. If hair is dry and weak with breaking ends, hair botox.
How long does a keratin treatment last?
Usually three to five months. The duration depends on the condition your hair started in and on aftercare: with a sulphate-free shampoo the result holds longer, with an ordinary clarifying one it fades faster.
Do these treatments damage hair?
Done correctly, no. The risk comes from overdoing the heat and from ignoring the condition of the hair. That is why the technician should assess the lengths and select the settings before starting.
Can they be done on coloured hair?
Yes. Waiting about two weeks after colouring is the usual advice. Your technician will tell you in advance how the tone may be affected — in some cases it shifts slightly.
When can I wash my hair afterwards?
It depends on the product line: with some you can wash the same day, with others you wait two or three days. Your technician will give you the exact figure at the end of the appointment — it is worth asking.
